Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.6 on February 5, 2026, marking a significant advancement in its flagship model's capacity for autonomous, professional work. This version is engineered specifically to handle large-scale software engineering and complex enterprise workflows.
Key Upgrades in Claude Opus 4.61 Million Token Context Window (Beta): For the first time in an Opus-class model, users can process vast amounts of data—such as entire codebases or long legal archives—with high retrieval reliability.
Agent Teams: Integrated into Claude Code, this feature allows the model to spin up multiple "sub-agents" to work in parallel. One agent can plan while others execute, debug, or review code simultaneously.
Adaptive Thinking: A new capability where the model dynamically decides how much reasoning effort to apply to a task. Developers can also manually set "effort levels" (Low, Medium, High, Max) to balance speed and intelligence.
Fast Mode (Research Preview): Introduced shortly after launch, this mode allows Opus 4.6 to generate outputs up to 2.5 times faster than the standard version for time-sensitive tasks.
128K Output Tokens: The model can now generate much longer single-run documents, such as complete technical reports or entire software modules, without being split into smaller parts.
Context Compaction (Beta): A new API feature that automatically summarizes older parts of a conversation as it nears the context limit, enabling virtually "infinite" sessions.
Performance & Benchmarks
Opus 4.6 has set several new industry records: Terminal-Bench 2.0: Achieved the highest score for agentic coding at 65.4%.
GDPval-AA: Leading on "economically valuable" professional tasks (finance and legal), outperforming OpenAI’s GPT-5.2.
Humanity’s Last Exam: Tops all frontier models in this complex multidisciplinary reasoning test.
Availability
The model is available through the Claude Developer Platform and the Claude Desktop App. It is also being rolled out to major cloud providers, including Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry on Azure.
